BWRT session for Anxiety

What Is BWRT and How Does It Help With Anxiety?

BWRT® (BrainWorking Recursive Therapy) is a modern, credentialed technique that works directly with your brain’s automatic stress response — the part responsible for panic attacks, phobias, and that wired, on-edge feeling logic alone can’t talk you out of. Unlike traditional talk therapy, BWRT doesn’t require you to relive or describe the original event in detail. Instead, it works with how your brain is reacting right now, in real time, and helps it build a calmer, more accurate response going forward. As a Certified BWRT® Practitioner in Nashville, I use it most often with clients dealing with panic that seems to come out of nowhere, driving anxiety, fear of flying, claustrophobia, and the kind of overthinking that won’t switch off — people who look completely fine on the outside and are quietly exhausted underneath. Here’s what it actually is, and how a session works.

What BWRT Actually Is

BWRT stands for BrainWorking Recursive Therapy and it’s a newer, more technical process than most people expect when they hear “therapy.” It isn’t hypnosis, and it isn’t talk therapy in the traditional sense, though it borrows from what we know about how the subconscious mind processes threat. As a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and BWRT® Practitioner, I use BWRT specifically because it works quickly and works with the pattern directly, not around it.

Here’s the part clients find most reassuring: you don’t have to walk me through the original event in detail. I don’t need your whole story to help your brain build a different response. We work with how you’re reacting today — the racing heart before a meeting, the tight chest at a merge lane, the spiral of “what if” at 2 a.m. — and help your nervous system update its response to those triggers.

How BWRT Helps With Anxiety, Panic, and Phobias

Anxiety doesn’t live in the thinking part of your brain. It lives in the part that runs faster than conscious thought — the part responsible for keeping you alive, which sometimes gets its wires crossed and starts treating an email, a flight, or a quiet room like an actual threat. You can’t logic your way out of a pattern that isn’t happening on the logical level in the first place.

BWRT works with that faster, automatic layer directly. In session, we identify the specific response your brain is running — the exact moment your body decides “this is dangerous” — and work with your brain’s own recursive processing to build a new, calmer response in its place. It’s especially effective with:

  • Panic attacks that have no clear trigger
  • Fear of flying or driving anxiety
  • Claustrophobia and other specific phobias
  • Anticipatory anxiety (dreading something before it happens)
  • Overthinking and repetitive worry loops

What a BWRT Session Actually Feels Like

You stay fully aware and in control the entire time. There’s no “going under,” no loss of control, nothing that resembles stage hypnosis. Most sessions start with a conversation, because I need to understand your specific pattern before we do anything else — anxiety isn’t the same for everyone, and the work shouldn’t be either. From there, we work through the BWRT process together, and most clients describe it as calm, focused, and surprisingly undramatic. Sessions run about an hour, and I offer them in person here in Nashville or by Zoom, whichever works better for you.

BWRT Is Offered as a 3-Session Package

BWRT is sold as a 3-session package, not a single drop-in appointment. When you book, you’re reserving your first session. From there, I schedule your next two sessions with you as we go, based on how your process is unfolding. This isn’t a rigid, pre-set protocol; it’s paced to what you actually need, which is exactly the individualized approach this work depends on.

Is BWRT Right for You?

This work tends to help people who keep having panic attacks with no obvious trigger, avoid driving, flying, or small spaces because of a fear that takes over, can’t stop replaying conversations or worst-case scenarios, feel like they’re “handling it” on the outside while quietly struggling underneath, or have tried willpower and coping tricks and are ready for something that addresses the pattern at its root.

BWRT® is a complementary technique and is not a replacement for medical or mental health treatment. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any medical or psychological condition. Many clients use this work alongside — not instead of — care from their doctor or therapist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BWRT safe?

Yes. You remain fully conscious, aware, and in control throughout the entire process — there’s no loss of control involved. BWRT is a credentialed technique, and as a Certified BWRT® Practitioner, I tailor every session to your specific history and pace.

How many sessions will I need?

BWRT is offered as a 3-session package. Your first session is booked directly; I schedule the next two with you as we go, based on how the work is progressing.

Do I have to describe my trauma or the original event in detail?

No. This is one of the things that sets BWRT apart from a lot of traditional talk therapy. We work with how your brain is responding right now, not a detailed retelling of the past.

Is BWRT the same as hypnosis?

No. BWRT and Clinical Hypnotherapy are two separate techniques I offer. BWRT doesn’t involve a hypnotic state at all — you’re alert and engaged in conversation throughout.

Can BWRT be done over Zoom, or do I need to come to Nashville?

Both. I offer BWRT in person in the Nashville/Brentwood area and by Zoom, so you can choose whichever fits your schedule and comfort level.

If panic, phobias, or a mind that won’t stop overthinking have been running the show for too long, the next step is a conversation, not a commitment.
